Mapúa University Collaborates with Mother Earth Foundation to Engineer a Zero Waste Campus Transformation

6 月 4, 2024 • 马普阿大学

Mapúa University is taking a definitive, institutional step toward radical environmental sustainability by launching a comprehensive Zero Waste initiative in partnership with the acclaimed Mother Earth Foundation – Philippines (MEF). This collaboration signals a bold commitment to ecological solid waste management and carbon footprint reduction across all university operations.

The Power of Partnership: Adopting a Proven Zero Waste Model

The Mother Earth Foundation (MEF) is the country’s foremost non-stock, non-profit organization actively engaged in tackling waste, toxic pollution, and climate change. MEF is renowned for its successful community-based Zero Waste advocacy, which has been effectively implemented in local government units (LGUs) and schools through dedicated training, lectures, and workshops. By partnering with MEF, Mapúa is adopting a proven, community-oriented framework for waste diversion and reduction.

A Coordinated, Campus-Wide Commitment

This transformative initiative is not limited to a single department; it involves a critical, integrated task force championed by the Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS). The project is drawing on the expertise of key administrative and operational offices, including the:

  • Office of Campus Maintenance, Development, and Operations (CMDO)
  • Institutional Laboratory Management Office (ILMO)
  • Office of International Linkages for Research and Development (ILRAD)

This concerted, multi-office approach ensures that the waste solutions are sound, scalable, and address the unique streams generated by a major technological and research university.

Phase One: The Waste Management Blueprint

The participants showing the symbolic hand gesture, “ZERO,” was graced by the presence of MEF’s Founder, Ms. Sonia Mendoza; Deputy Director for Programs, Mr. Rap Villavicencio; and other MEF Program Officers. Mapúa University’s VP and Head of CMDO/CDMO, Ms. Margarita Camacho; Director of ILMO, Engr. Josephine Ng; Director of ILRAD, Dr. Delia Senoro also attended the meeting and lastly, the organizers of IGS – with IGS Director, Dr. Lawrence Madriaga and Campus Sustainability Specialist, Chelo Esplana.

To ensure the success of the transformation, Mapúa and Mother Earth Foundation met on June 4, 2025 at the Mapúa University Intramuros Campus – Yuchengco Innovation Conference Room. This initial phase involves commissioning the MEF to conduct a detailed, comprehensive waste profiling of the University.

This essential diagnostic phase will meticulously analyze the current waste outputs, consumption patterns, and operational challenges. The results will allow MEF to determine the best multiple waste management methodologies specifically applicable to Mapúa’s campuses, paving the way for the full implementation of a customized Zero Waste blueprint.

This strategic alliance reinforces Mapúa’s commitment to creating a sustainable future, moving beyond academic research to implement practical, real-world solutions that benefit both the Mapúan community and the wider environment.
