Have you ever beamed with joy after clutching a round when you’re the only player alive? Or have you ever been under tremendous pressure to help your team pull off a miraculous comeback and win the game? These are the feelings players experience when they play competitive video games. And as many become more passionate about these intense moments, what was once just a hobby has evolved into something bigger—the rise of esports.

In the Philippines, esports has grown from small internet café tournaments to packed arenas and global competitions streamed to millions. It’s now a booming industry shaping careers, inspiring young gamers, and putting the country on the map in the international gaming scene. Esports has not only created new opportunities for professional players but has also fueled growth across the entire gaming industry.

In this blog, we’ll explore how the rise of esports shapes the gaming industry in the Philippines.

What is Esports?

Esports, or electronic sports, is competitive video gaming. It involves organized multiplayer video game competitions, often between professional players, either as individuals or teams. Popular esports titles include Mobile Legends, League of Legends, Valorant, Dota 2, and CS:GO, just to name a few.

What makes this gaming industry trend different from casual gaming is the level of competition, structure, and audience. Esports events are often live-streamed to millions and take place in arenas filled with cheering fans. Teams have coaches, analysts, and sponsors. Prize pools can reach millions of pesos—or even millions of dollars in global tournaments. In short, esports has become its own massive industry, complete with professional leagues, athletes, teams, and fans.

How is the Esports Scene in the Philippines?

The esports scene in the Philippines has experienced explosive growth over the last decade. As of September 2024, there were 313 professional Filipino players actively competing in esports tournaments, according to Statista. One of the key drivers of this boom is the accessibility of mobile games and affordable mobile data, allowing Filipinos from all walks of life to join the competitive gaming community.

Supporting this rapid rise is the Philippine Esports Organization (PESO), the official governing body for esports in the country. Recognized by the Philippine Olympic Committee, PESO helps regulate tournaments, set standards for professional conduct, and provide opportunities for Filipino esports athletes to compete on both local and international stages. With this formal structure in place, the Philippines has solidified its position as one of Southeast Asia’s most promising hubs for esports talent and development.

Esports as a Legitimate Career

Esports was recognized as a medal sport at the 2022 Asian Games in China. This was a major turning point, showing that esports can be a career. Several esports athletes in the country have become household names in the gaming community including Djardel “DJ” Mampusti and Karlo “Kuku” Palad of Dota 2 fame, and Karl “Karltzy” Nepomuceno of Mobile Legends. These athletes earn money through team salaries, sponsorships, streaming, and tournament winnings.

Not only has esports gained legitimacy as a profession, but well-known groups like Omega Esports, Bren Esports, TNC Pro Team, and Blacklist International have made a name for themselves in regional and worldwide competitions. These teams have built huge fan bases, proving there’s a strong demand for the esports industry in the Philippines.

Esports Tournaments and Events

From nationwide leagues to international tournaments, esports events are now a regular part of Filipino pop culture. Major events like The Nationals, MPL (Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League), and Valorant Champions Tour draw massive audiences, both online and in-person. These tournaments are often streamed live on platforms like Facebook Gaming, YouTube, and Twitch, with thousands (even millions) of Filipino fans tuning in to support their favorite teams and players.

Even traditional sports organizations are recognizing the impact of esports. The UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines), known for collegiate basketball and volleyball, now includes an esports category. This move further legitimizes esports as a competitive sport on par with traditional athletics. It also gives student-athletes a platform to showcase their gaming skills, representing their universities in tournaments that draw national attention. The addition of esports to UAAP highlights how deeply integrated competitive gaming has become in Filipino culture, especially among the youth.

How Does Esports Affect the Gaming Industry in the Philippines?

The rise of esports has had a massive impact on the gaming industry, creating new opportunities and reshaping perceptions about gaming.

New Career Opportunities

Esports has opened doors to careers in game development and those that weren’t considered “real jobs” before. You don’t have to be a professional player to work in esports. There’s room for shoutcasters (esports commentators), coaches, analysts, team managers, streamers, content creators, event organizers, marketing professionals, and even psychologists who help with player wellness. As esports grows, so does the need for professionals who can support this booming ecosystem.

Growth of Game Development

As more Filipinos engage with esports, interest in game development has also increased. The demand for high-quality games, especially mobile games, has encouraged more local developers to create games suited to the Filipino market. IT Schools like Mapúa University now offer game development programs to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals. Students can learn coding, designing characters, or creating immersive worlds, and have a clearer path to joining the gaming industry.

Boost to the Economy

The Philippine esports industry generates millions of pesos in revenue from tournament prize pools, sponsorships, streaming, and merchandise. Esports events bring in tourism and boost local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and event venues. In fact, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has expressed interest in supporting esports as part of the country’s growing digital economy.

Changing Mindsets About Gaming

Gone are the days when gaming was dismissed as a waste of time. Esports has helped legitimize gaming as a professional pursuit. Many Filipino parents are becoming more open-minded, seeing that their children can build successful careers in esports or acquire roles in game development, graphic design, and digital marketing.
