Tips on Maintaining Your Scholarship
While securing a scholarship is a great achievement, the real challenge comes after. Many scholarships are renewable, which means you need to reapply or requalify for the same scholarship program yearly or for each term. Here are some tips to help you stay on track and ensure you keep your scholarship throughout your academic journey:
1. Keep Your Grades Up
Your primary responsibility as a scholar is to meet the academic requirements set by your sponsor and your university. This often includes maintaining a specific GWA and completing a certain number of credits each term. Be aware of your scholarship’s specific academic standards and seek help if you’re struggling in any subject.
2. Join Campus Life
Some scholarships, especially those that value leadership or volunteerism, require you to participate in campus activities or student organizations. As the saying goes, learning does not end in the classroom. Extracurricular activities are a great way to enrich your college experience and show your commitment as a scholar. On top of that, these activities can build up your resume and make you stand out in the job market.
3. Manage Your Time Effectively
Scholars often find it challenging to balance schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and personal responsibilities. It’s important to create a schedule that helps you focus on one task at a time. Remember, scholarships are often based on a certain level of academic standing, so studying should always be a priority. But for you to be able to perform at your best, you need to take care of yourself too.
4. Do Not Break School Rules
It goes without saying—do not break the rules. Even small infractions can taint your integrity as a model student and risk you losing your scholarship. As a scholar, you represent your sponsor and the university. It’s essential that you leave a good impression and embody their values.
5. Stay Informed About Scholarship Policies
Regularly check for updates or changes to your scholarship program. Make sure that you comply with any additional requirements such as maintaining a full-time status, completing community service, or joining organizations.
6. Communicate with Your Scholarship Provider
If you’re having trouble maintaining your scholarship training, reach out to your scholarship advisor or office for guidance. They may offer support or recommend ways to retain your eligibility.
