Inspiring Positive Change at the Grassroots Through Mental Health

December 1, 2023 • Mapúa University

In a remarkable endeavor to prioritize mental health and wellbeing at the grassroots level, Sister Maria Carmela Brescia School recently hosted a thought-provoking event entitled “Kalusugang Pangkaisipan: Susi Tungo sa Responsableng Pagpapamilya.” This event, held on November 18, 2023, exemplified the school’s unwavering commitment to its students and parents while shedding light on the critical importance of mental health awareness within the community. The school, guided by the dedicated Franciscan Immaculatine Sisters, has been a beacon of education for underprivileged children in Tagaytay. Their holistic approach to education has consistently encompassed not only academic excellence but also the emotional and psychological well-being of their students.

With hearts full of joy, these 3 Franciscan Sisters enthusiastically presented Dr. Terry Arias with a certificate of appreciation.

The event’s keynote speaker, Dr. Antero Rosauro V. Arias Jr., professionally known as “Dr. Terry,” introduced attendees to the Katuwang sa Pangkalusugang Mental ng Tagaytay, the mental health program that he helped establish in Tagaytay. The community-based mental health clinic, located at the Tanggapan ng Katuwang underscores the integral connection between physical health and mental health. It emphasizes that real health can only be achieved when both aspects of health are in harmony. The program, within its political domain, is led by none other than Hon. Vice-Mayor Dr. Agnes D. Tolentino, DMD, whose compassionate leadership has been instrumental in promoting mental health awareness. Alongside her, Hon. Cavite Vice-Governor Athena D. Tolentino, the visionary behind this program, recognized that mental health is equally vital as physical health and should leave no one behind. In the medical mental health domain, Dr. Liza Fe Capupus, MD, MPH, leads the way, ensuring that the program provides comprehensive healthcare for mental well-being.

Dr. Terry, on the other hand, serves in the mental health and psychosocial domain of the program. A Doctor of Clinical Psychology with licenses in psychology and guidance and counseling, he brings a wealth of knowledge to the initiative. Dr. Terry’s training in Psychological First Aid, including his successfully accomplished Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from John Hopkins University, and his recertification as a Mental Health First Responder, showcase his dedication to the cause. One of the unique aspects of the Katuwang program is its general membership domain, comprised of residents who have been trained to provide Psychological First Aid. These individuals play a pivotal role in offering immediate support to those in emotional distress, embodying the spirit of community care.

Sr. Dina Comilan, sfi, School Principal, personally awarded the certificate of appreciation with much enthusiasm to Dr. Terry Arias.

It was a testament to the fact that Sister Maria Carmela Brescia School’s commitment to nurturing not just young minds, but also resilient spirits is making a tangible difference in the community. As we reflect on the impact of this event, it becomes evident that the school’s dedication to holistic education is paving the way for a healthier, happier community. The initiative serves as a shining example, demonstrating that mental health is the cornerstone of a thriving society, and the school’s efforts are igniting a powerful positive change at the grassroots level.
