Site Visit to Alterna Verde Corporation’s Sustainable Environmental Resource Re-genesis System (SERRS) Waste-to-Energy and Carbon Capture Technology Facility

August 26, 2025 • Mapúa University

A Mapúa University delegation, led by Dr. Lawrence Madriaga from the Institute of Global Sustainability (IGS) and engineers from the Campus, Development, and Maintenance Office (CDMO), visited the Alterna Verde Corporation’s (AVC) Sustainable Environmental Resource Re-genesis System (SERRS) facility located at Sitio Baloc Road, Sto. Niño, San Pablo City, Laguna on August 26, 2025. Hosted by AVC President Dr. Nervy Santiago and his team, the visit aimed to explore collaboration opportunities in sustainability, research, and student development.

The San Pablo SERRS Facility utilizes bio-methanation, wind energy, biofuel processing, and hydro-screw
technology to convert waste into biogas, electricity, and organic fertilizer

AVC’s waste-to-energy plant diverts waste from landfills, cuts greenhouse gas emissions, and supports energy independence. It uses anaerobic digestion, bio-methanation, biofuel processing, wind energy, and hydro-screw technology to generate electricity, biogas, and organic fertilizer. The facility complies with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and ECC regulations, and provides free residential waste collection in San Pablo City, while charging commercial establishments to ensure financial sustainability.

The following are the collaboration opportunities tackled during the said visit:

  1. Research Partnership – Access for Mapúa faculty/students to conduct studies on waste management, renewable energy, and environmental engineering.
  2. Thesis Project Support – AVC to provide material/financial aid for aligned student projects.
  3. Instructional Support – Assistance in setting up small-scale wind turbines at Mapúa for educational and energy purposes.
  4. Internship Opportunities – Capacity to host up to 30 OJTs for Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Environmental Science/Engineering students.

Consequently, the visit reinforced shared goals between Mapúa University and AVC in advancing sustainability (SDG 11), innovation (SDG 9), and experiential learning (SDG 4). Follow-up meetings and formal agreements are recommended to solidify this partnership.
