Mapua University Sustainability Council The Institute for Global Sustainability – Student Arm: SG 17 Administration

Purpose

The Mapua University Sustainability Council is created to as the prime mover of the Mapua Institute for Global Sustainability (MIGS) programs to foster a *sustainable campus.

*To attain a sustainable campus is to have achieved a beyond-standard reduction of its ecological footprint. In addition, a sustainable campus is a space where the community can learn about, and subsequently develop, a culture of sustainability and stewardship of natural resources.

Vision

Consistent with the vision of Mapua Institute for Global sustainability, the vision of the Council is to transform Mapua University as a center of excellence in advancing sustainable development through interdisciplinary research, innovative education, and collaborative partnerships.

Mission

Consistent with the mission of Mapua Institute fir Global Sustainability, the mission of the Council is as follows:

to address complex global and local sustainability challenges by fostering an integrated approach that combines scientific knowledge with practical application.
to prioritize urban sustainability, resource management, and policy advocacy, while embedding sustainability into the campus operations.
to shape a sustainable future by providing a hub for thought leadership, community engagement, and the cultivation of future leaders equipped to drive transformative change.

Composition of the Sustainability Council

The Council, with its diverse composition, shall collectively contribute to advancing the sustainability initiatives of MIGS.

Responsibilities of the Sustainability Council

Strategic Coordination
The Council shall support MIGS in coordinating sustainability efforts across all academic and non-academic departments of the Mapua University, in line with the university’s mission and goals.
Policy Development and Implementation
The Council shall help formulate and implement policies related to the three pillars of sustainability, such as environmental conservation, social equity, and economic responsibility, which guide campus practices and decision-making.
Education and Awareness
The Council shall support MIGS in its efforts to educate the university community (students, faculty, staff) about sustainability principles through workshops, seminars, and campaigns to raise awareness and inspire behavior change.
Resource Management
The Council shall help oversee resource utilization (i.e., energy, water, waste, land) by promoting efficient practices that contribute to cost savings and environmental protection.
Research and Innovation
The Council shall help promote and implement collaboration among academic departments, with non-academic departments, and with organizations outside the university for research on sustainability to generate innovative solutions to address local and global challenges.
Community Engagement
The Council shall support the programs of MIGS to engage with local communities and nonprofit organizations to foster partnerships for sustainability efforts beyond campus boundaries.
Equity and Inclusion
The Council shall advocate for fair and equitable practices, i.e., ensuring that sustainability initiatives consider social justice and inclusivity.
Advocacy and Influence
The Council shall represent the university in sustainability networks, influencing policy at regional, national, and international levels.

Quarterly Meeting

The Sustainability Council shall meet once every quarter (i.e., January, April, July, October) to discuss updates and resolve issues of immediate concern. However, additional special meetings with select Council members, depending on agenda of immediate concern, may be called.

The SUSTAINABILITY GROUP (SG17) was established in response to the growing need for a structured, student-led mechanism that actively supports and advances Mapúa University’s commitment to sustainability, global responsibility, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a student arm aligned with the Mapúa Institute for Global Sustainability (Mapúa-IGS), the organization is designed not merely as an advocacy group, but as an academic oriented, impact-driven body that integrates leadership development, interdisciplinary collaboration, and measurable SDG initiatives within the university ecosystem.

The Constitution and By-Laws of SUSTAINABILITY GROUP (SG17) were intentionally crafted to balance student democratic participation, effective executive leadership, and institutional accountability. Given the multi-campus structure of Mapúa University, the complexity of SDG-aligned initiatives, and the need for continuity across academic terms, the organization adopts a governance framework that empowers elected student leaders while embedding safeguards against abuse, mission drift, and organizational instability.

Position	Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
President	Provides overall leadership and strategic direction; represents the organization internally and externally; oversees all committees; coordinates with the Mapúa UN SDG Office and partners; issues Executive Orders consistent with the Constitution; appoints auxiliary officers; and creates or reorganizes committees to support organizational goals.
Executive Vice President	Serves as the second-highest executive officer; assists the President in managing operations and strategic initiatives; assumes presidential duties when necessary; supervises Vice Presidents and committee chairs; and ensures coordination among committees and alignment with the organization’s mission and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Internal Vice Presidents (Intramuros, Makati, and Other Campuses)	Manage campus-based operations, membership, and activities within their assigned campus clusters; coordinate implementation of projects; strengthen collaboration among campuses; and co-chair the Community Engagement Committee.
Vice President for External Affairs	Develops partnerships and institutional linkages; represents the organization in university and inter-organizational affairs; serves as the Council of Organizations (COO) Representative; coordinates collaborative initiatives with student organizations; oversees public relations; and ensures compliance with university policies on student organizations.
Secretary-General	Oversees organizational documentation, records, meeting minutes, and official communications; maintains organizational records; and co-chairs the Education and Advocacy Committee.
Assistant Secretary	Assists the Secretary-General in documentation, correspondence, and records management while supporting the Education and Advocacy Committee as co-chair.
Treasurer	Manages the organization’s finances, budgeting, and financial records; ensures responsible use of funds; and co-chairs the Research and Innovation Committee.
Auditor	Reviews financial records and transactions to ensure accountability, transparency, and compliance with organizational policies; and co-chairs the Research and Innovation Committee.
Directors for SDG Clusters	Lead the planning, implementation, and coordination of initiatives related to their assigned Sustainable Development Goals; monitor program performance; and chair the Sustainability Monitoring Committee to track organizational impact and progress toward the SDGs.
